Birds fly south for the winter, to escape the cold weather of the northern climes. The human version - aka “snowbirds” - do the same thing.
It’s a smart strategy.
Consider the options:
1) Stay up north for the winter, or anywhere else that’s cold. Deal with long stretches of freezing temperatures, icy roads, slippery steps, snowfall after snowfall of heavy white stuff that has to be shoveled off driveways and cars. Getting chilled to the bone, day after dreary day. Ugh.
OR…

I’ve waxed poetic before about the many benefits of staying in one of our vacation rental homes in the non-peak times of the year.
Basically, it boils down to these main ones:
- You’ll have a better selection. While we have a terrific portfolio of homes - 37 to be exact - they fill up fast for the peak season. Kids are out of school, families are traveling, and people flock to the beach in the summer. Some people even book their favorite home a whole year ahead of time. It can be challenging to find availability in your top choices. By coming in the off-season, you’ll have greater chance of getting your top pick, and without months or even a year of lead time.
- You don’t have to deal with the crowds. With summer come people, and lots of them. Not only are our vacation homes full, but so are the parking spaces, restaurants and roads. Thankfully our beach is never “full” per se, like they are in some places, but it is definitely more crowded. By coming during the quieter time of the year, you’ll experience more peace and quiet. It’s easier to tune in to nature when there’s not a lot of noise around. And the beach in the rest of the year has a special beauty all its own.
- You can get a really good deal. The rates in all our homes drop in the off-peak times of the year. Your savings will vary by property and by the calendar. But suffice it to say you’ll save a significant chunk of change simply by selecting different dates in a different season. This is true for stays of any length, even short ones.
