If you are a fan of our Isle of Palms vacation rentals, and the Charleston area in general, chances are you already know about some of the many “best of” lists the Holy City has been on. As I covered HERE, it was a pretty big deal a couple weeks ago when Travel + Leisure named Charleston the very best city on planet earth to visit. It’s the first time a North American city has been thus named, so it’s quite an honor.

Well, Charleston has taken the number one spot on another interesting list. Apparently, the Charleston area with its surrounding beaches is the #1 place in the entire country for dogs, according to Realtor.com. A whopping 68% of all households here have at least one dog as a member. This is compared to the national average of 44%. Nationally, 35% of households have at least one cat.

Realtor.com bases their ranking on the following factors:

Percentage of households that own a dog;
Number of dog parks, beaches and trails;
Number of dog-friendly establishments - restaurants and bars;
Number of providers of services for pets (vets, groomers, kennels, pet stores, etc.)
Availability of affordable dog walkers.

Realtor.com had this to say about Charleston: “The rapport between humans and dogs in Charleston goes way back, long before the city was named one of the most dog-friendly cities by Rover.com. Poogan’s Porch, one of the city’s oldest restaurants, was named after the dog that began parking himself on the, um, porch in 1976. After being adopted by the owner, Poogan served as the restaurant’s official greeter.” They also say a factor was the canine-friendly local beaches, like Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s, which have times when dogs can be off leash. Like our beaches, many of our luxury beach house rentals SC are dog friendly, too. When you are booking a Charleston beach house, just mention you’d like to bring your canine and we’ll try to match you with the right one. Here’s more on the story from the Post & Courier: http://www.postandcourier.com/ Speaking of dogs… Charleston is number one for dogs, plus it has no shortage of FESTIVALS of every possible kind, so it makes perfect sense that the two should collide. Tomorrow - Wednesday, July 27th - is the very first, hopefully annual Bow Wow Film Festival, celebrating all things dog. It serves as a fundraiser for the fine folks at Pet Helpers, a very worthy cause. It’ll kick off with a Yappy Hour starting at 5:00 p.m., then there’ll be two 40-minute reels of short films about canines - adventure dogs, service dogs, beloved best friends. This is a traveling film festival that’s had great response elsewhere. There will also be plenty of vendors, exhibits, raffles and free stuff for your dog. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door, $5 for those 12 and under. It lasts till 10:00 p.m. Here’s a link to the website, with plenty more info, a trailer, and online ticket purchasing: http://www.bowwowfilmfest.com/

And here's a good eating tip for anyone staying in one of our Isle of Palms vacation rentals ...

If you happen to be staying in one of our rental homes South Carolina - namely a luxury house on Isle of Palms - there is a new dining option for breakfast and lunch that’s getting a lot of buzz. It’s called FEAST Charleston. It’s the brainchild and baby of chef Air Casebier, who moved to Charleston from New York City where he worked with famed chef Tom Colicchio. Air started out catering here, but it’s now grown into a new brick & mortar café on the IOP, convenient to all our Isle of Palms vacation rentals. Its address is 1028 Carolina Boulevard, just up the street from Exclusive Properties’ office for beach rentals Charleston. FEAST Charleston is open Tuesday through Sunday, from 8:30 a.m. till 3:00 p.m. The emphasis is on fresh and local fare, and the menu looks delicious (see below). Yes, it’s uber close to our Isle of Palms luxury rentals, but it looks good enough to drive to from a Folly Beach house Charleston.
