As I’ve mentioned more than once, festival season is in full-force, making it an exceptionally good time to be staying in one of our Isle of Palms luxury rentals. This weekend is one of Charleston’s oldest, not to mention most delicious.  It’s the 47th annual Charleston Greek Festival, and it’s going on today through Sunday (May 12th through the 14th). Think gyros (veggie, lamb, chicken or shrimp)… spanakopita… dolmades… Greek salad… pastichio… moussaka… Greek chicken… keftedes… and don’t forget the pastries!  They include: baklava, finikia, koulourakia, kataife, kourabiedes, paximadia, bougatsa, and loukoumades.  Thankfully there are translations and descriptions here:  http://www.charlestongreekfestival.com/menu/

There will be all things Greek  -  Greek food of course, Greek music, dancing and performances by Icarus,  Hellas, Kyklonakia and Pegasus.  Also keep an eye peeled for vendors selling Greek clothes, jewelry, art and Greek music CDs, as well as Greek wine tastings, Hellenic cultural events and tours of the historic church. Admission is $5 general, $3 for senioirs & students.  It’s FREE for kids 12 and under, active military, and moms on Mother’s Day. Hours are 5:00 p.m. till 10:00 p.m. Friday, 11:00 a.m. till 10:00 p.m. Saturday, then noon till 6:00 p.m. on Sunday (Mother’s Day). It takes place at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church at 30 Race Street in downtown Charleston.  It’s convenient to all our SC vacation rentals, situated pretty much equidistant from both our Isle of Palms vacation rentals and our Folly Beach rentals Charleston. There’s free parking and a free shuttle leaving from Harborview Office Tower at 19 Hagood Avenue.  Buses will run every 10 minutes.  It’s also very convenient to all our luxury beach house rentals SC, and saves you the hassle of finding parking downtown. Here’s the official website: http://www.charlestongreekfestival.com/ And here’s their fun Facebook page, complete with classic quotes from “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”:  https://www.facebook.com/charlestongreekfestival/ So even though you may be here in a Charleston beach house, you can take a nice daytrip to Greece!

Waterparks now open near our Isle of Palms luxury rentals

Well, the mercury is beginning to rise, and right on cue the fun waterparks in the area are now open. As I’ve blogged about before, the county parks around all our rental homes South Carolina are downright exceptional.  One of the neat features of three of them is a really cool   -  literally  -  waterpark, with elements that are fun for both kids and adults, especially when the weather gets warm. The three parks include:

  • Splash Island at Palmetto Islands County Park in Mount Pleasant. This is east of the Cooper and is the closest to your luxury house on Isle of Palms.  Splash Island is like a tropical oasis amidst the marsh with cool features like a 200-foot body flume, 16-foot otter slide, cyclone swirling water ride, plus geysers, sprays and raindrop waterfalls.
  • Splash Zone at James Island County Park. This is west of the Ashley and is most convenient to a Folly Beach house Charleston. It has more of a Caribbean vibe with 200-foot tube and open slides, a 500-foot lazy river with sprays & waterfalls, and island-style play structures.
  • Whirlin’ Waters Adventure Waterpark at Wannamaker Park in North Charleston. This is the largest of the area waterparks and boasts the Otter Bay pool area, Big Splash Tree House (with 66 interactive elements), Lily Pad Lagoon, Big Kahuna wave pool, Tubular Twister, Rip Tide Run, and 870-foot Rollin’ River lazy river.

Right now until June, the three parks are open weekends only (except for Memorial Day), from 10:00 a.m. till 6:00 p.m.  Then beginning in June they’ll be open daily during the summer season.
