Well, the last blog covered how simple, natural ingredients can be a boon to your health and your pocketbook, not to mention the planet, all while skillfully avoiding unnecessary toxins.

This time, I’d like to focus on just one of these… the mighty LEMON.

In fact, if you are coming to one of our rental homes South Carolina… be it a luxury house on Isle of Palms or a Folly Beach house Charleston… based on what I’ve read, just throw a bunch of lemons in your suitcase and you’ll basically be good to go.

Actually, lemons grow well on the Isle of Palms and in Charleston.  So depending on when you are here staying in a Charleston beach house, you might just pick your own.

Funny how sometimes when you travel… say, you’re heading to one of our beach rentals Charleston, maybe one of our Isle of Palms vacation rentals.  The weather may be warm and yet still, someone in your group of family and friends may end up with a sore or scratchy throat.

Well, one of my all-time favorite home remedies is fresh lemon juice (with a little grated zest for good measure) mixed with honey in very hot water.  It helps soothe a sore throat and inevitably makes one feel immeasurably better.

Another great use is an all-natural, do-it-yourself citrus spray cleaner that only uses TWO ingredients and is easy to assemble.  Here’s a link with all the instructions on how to make and use it:

This is a great year-round spray that would freshen up private homes or SC vacation rentals alike.

Here’s a link to a very informative webpage entitled, “45 Uses for Lemons That Will Blow Your Socks Off.”  The whole list is worth reading.  It’s written by a fellow named John Summerly, who’s all about disease prevention and is a nutritionist, herbologist and homeopathic practitioner:

OK, there’s yet another link about lemons and their many attributes.  This one also has good tips about selecting, storing, and juicing lemons.  For example, here’s what it has to say about juicing:

Juicing lemons

To get the most juice from a lemon, it should be allowed to reach room temperature, or microwaved for a few seconds prior to juicing. Using your palm to roll the lemon on a hard surface can also help improve juice yields. If you only need a little juice, some people pierce the end with a fork, squeeze the amount needed, cover the holes with tape and then store in the fridge.

I also liked this tip about keeping a microwave fresh:

Heat a bowl of water and lemon slices in your microwave for 30 seconds to a minute; then wipe out the oven. Stains will be easier to remove and old food odors will be neutralized.

Here’s the full list from author Michael Bloch:

Oh and by the way, lemons also make a great base for homemade limoncello :)
