For ages, people have been coming to the Isle of Palms to relax and recharge their proverbial batteries. There’s nothing quite like a beach getaway and a stay in one of our Isle of Palms vacation rentals to refill your mental and physical reserves.
Now, you can charge your vehicle, too.
In exciting news, the Isle of Palms has just become home to a brand new Tesla Supercharger station. And it’s not just for Teslas.
Not only that, but this particular Supercharger station is quite unusual and the first of its kind in the state of South Carolina.
Here’s what the City of Isle of Palms had to say: “The new charging station will provide a convenient amenity for both residents and visitors traveling to the island in electric vehicles, supporting a wider range of transportation options.”
IOP Supercharger station – a First in SC
The new Supercharger station boasts four Tesla V4 Supercharger stalls - able to deliver charging speeds of up to 325 kW, depending on the vehicle. They’re outfitted with Magic Dock and two kinds of plugs - Tesla (NACS) and also CCSs (J1772). One of the stalls, the furthest to the left, is ADA compliant, with plenty of room around it.
The station just opened and is fully functional.
And get this: the IOP has the very first “Tesla Supercharger for Business Site” in the state of South Carolina, where a business actually owns the property and infrastructure. In this case, it’s Dominion Energy, who provides electricity to the region.
Dominion’s done a cool thing, making the chargers look quite eye-catching. Working with LINGEO Signs, they wrapped all four of the stalls in colorful artwork inspired by the Isle of Palms.
Super convenient location
Dominion sited the Supercharger station in a supremely convenient location.
It’s next to the Sea Island Shopping Center, which holds Harris-Teeter grocery store, The Refuge, Long Island Café, the Co-op (home of the famous frosé) and more.
The Superchargers are located in the far left part of the parking lot, right next to the Isle of Palms Connector, behind Island Liquors. You can actually see it when you drive up the IOP Connector as you leave the island.
The IOP Supercharger’s street address is 1507 Palm Boulevard, Isle of Palms. You can read more about the project at EVWire.
How to find chargers anywhere
PlugShare is a terrific online resource with an interactive map of all the places around the world where you can charge electric vehicles. It’s super easy to use and search for convenient spots, giving you details and specs for the different locations.
Here’s PlugShare’s description of the IOP’s new Supercharger station:
Ports: 4 CCS DCFCs
Plug Types: CCS1, NACS (Tesla)
Isle of Palms, SC: (4) Superchargers, up to 325kW max.
This Supercharger is open to Tesla and other EVs with CCS compatibility CCS adapter not required as they are equipped with Magic Dock, a built in CCS adapter. Press and hold the button on the handle for 2 seconds, then push up to release the adapter and then pull down.

EV charging near Charleston
Thankfully, new EV charging locations are popping up all over, all the time. The City of Charleston was a very early champion of the movement, with former Mayor Joe Riley adding them to the Visitor’s Center and area parking garages many years ago, when they were a relative rarity.
Most of the EV charging stations around the Lowcountry are regular ones, although superchargers are starting to show up, especially in West Ashley and North Charleston.
There’s just one other supercharger east of the Cooper River in Mount Pleasant. It’s located in the Market at Oakland Shopping Center, up Highway 17 North, near the big Walmart Supercenter. Unlike the IOP’s, this one only has NACS (Tesla) plugs, though… so if you have a CCS, you’ll need an approved NACS adapter.
Better to just use the fancy new one right here on the IOP.
