This weekend has a bunch of fun events, and Waterfront Park plays a big part. In that last blog, I talked about the Ravenel Bridge that spans the water between Mount Pleasant and the downtown Charleston.  Well, this weekend there’s a neat thing going on on each side.  Friday, it’s at the base of the bridge on the Mount Pleasant side.  Sunday, it’s running down the spine of the downtown peninsula.  More about them in a minute. Charleston County is blessed with one of the best park systems I’ve ever seen.  It’s a real benefit whether you are a local or here visiting. These include beach parks.  There’s one on the Isle of Palms, right at the base of the Connector.  There’s also Beachwalker on Kiawah and one on Folly.  One of my favorites is Palmetto Island County Park in Mount Pleasant.  PICP is a great place to take your kids, with its super cool playground and water park.  It’s also a great place to take your dog, with its terrific off-leash dog agility park.  There are miles of walking or running trails, and you can rent a bike or a paddleboat.  It’s convenient to the Isle of Palms.  Just head over the IOP Connector, turn right on 17, turn left on Long Point, pass Boone Hall Plantation, cross the creek and turn right. Well, one of the most popular area parks is the Memorial Waterfront Park in Mount Pleasant It’s located under the Ravenel Bridge and includes a 1,250-foot pier that offers great views and fishing, to boot. It’s also become a popular venue for special events.  Cases in point: the very popular Shaggin’ on the Cooper dance parties, the Sweetgrass Festival, and the Blessing of the Fleet.  Then there’s the annual Party in the Park, put on by the fun folks at radio station WEZL 103.5 FM.  It’s a summer series of concerts and vendors that takes place every Tuesday evening in June.

Friday Fun for all ages at Waterfront Park

  Get set for yet another fun mini-festival at Waterfront Park.  It’s Waterfront Music & Movies, taking place Fridays during August. Basically, these are free outdoor movie screenings at Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park, with live music and food thrown in for good measure.  Here are the specs:

  • The movie starts at about 8:30 (basically at sunset);
  • Feel free to bring blankets or chairs;
  • Free admission and free parking;
  • For your GPS: 99 Harry Hallman Jr. Blvd, Mount Pleasant
  • More info.

Other movies showing there on Fridays this August include “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2.”

Second Sunday on King

  Then this Sunday is the monthly fun-day, Second Sunday on King. A big chunk of King Street downtown is blocked off to pedestrian and canine traffic only from 1:00 till 5:00 in the afternoon.  Restaurants have tables set up on the street, there are musicians and food vendors galore.  This event has grown bigger and better since in cranked up several years ago. Here’s a link to the website; you can read more about the music lineup and print out a voucher for free garage parking.  (BTW – they also have some free parking vouchers available while they last at the official Second Sunday booth). King Street has been voted one of the ten best shopping streets in America.  If you do go this weekend, please be sure to stay hydrated.  It’s hot out there. So have a fun weekend that’s bookended with good options.  And when you are looking for SC vacation rentals, call Exclusive Properties.  We’ll put you in the perfect one at the beach near Charleston.
