One of the preeminent arts festivals in the country (and arguably the world) takes place each year in Charleston, and one of our luxury beach house rentals SC makes the perfect home base. Of course I’m talking about Spoleto, and they have just announced who will be performing this year and when. It’s an impressive and eclectic mix, as usual. Adam Parker of the Post and Courier recently covered the newly-announced season. In looking for a theme, he has unofficially dubbed it the Year of the Woman. This is pretty timely indeed, considering the tenor of the recent Golden Globes awards show. Highlights include a new opera “Tree of Codes” created by a woman, Liza Lim. She’ll stage it at the historic Dock Street Theater. The Music in Time Series will feature the works of nine different female composers. Popular tap dancer Michelle Dorrance returns for two new shows. Director Emma Rice will head up the Kneehigh and Bristol Old Vic’s production of “The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk,” also at the Dock. Other major performances include Brahm’s German Requiem, and works by Mozart and Mahler. The Miami Ballet is prominently featured in multiple events. Local Gullah band Ranky Tanky featuring Quiana Parler is sure to sell out. Another performer sure to be a big hit is Jon Batiste. He’s the leader of the house band for Charleston native Stephen Colbert on the Late Show. Jon Batiste is a super-gifted high energy performer, born in Louisiana and trained at Julliard. He’ll be headlining two shows in the Cistern Yard during the festival’s opening weekend.
One noteworthy change this year - the location of the finale. Normally happening on the grounds of Middleton Place, this year the festival finale will take place at The Joe. That’s the Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park in downtown Charleston. It’s actually an even more convenient location for most of our luxury beach house rentals SC. Headlining will be The Lone Bellow band.
