If you are in one of our SC vacation rentals this week, you may just want to hunker down in your Charleston beach house and avoid the crowds.  Nothing like snuggling down in a luxury house on Isle of Palms after a walk on the beach, sipping on something warm, watching the ball drop in Times Square. Not surprisingly, there’s a large number of evening parties being hosted around town, at various venues and restaurants.  They range from casual to the fully decked out, like the Snyder Grand Ball at the Aquarium.  This year’s black tie ball will feature music by the David Higgins Band and DJ Natty Heavy.  Here’s the official site: You could opt for “Charleston’s largest New Year’s Eve Celebration.”   The Yorktown Countdown takes place aboard the aircraft carrier.  It starts at 9:00 p.m. and tickets range in price, with VIP options.  Get ready for a wide range of music, both live and DJed – dance, funk, hip hop, rock, 80’s and Top 40 hits. There are also a couple fun free events.  If you’re in one of the Folly Beach rentals Charleston, they’re having their own unique version of the Times Square Ball Drop  --  except they’ll be dropping a pair of giant flip flops from the top of the Tides Hotel.  It’s the Folly Flip Flop Drop, and it’ll be going on from about 9:30 p.m. till 12:30 a.m.  They’ll be closing off Center Street and the city has issued a special permit to allow alcohol consumption in the street.  There will be plenty of food and drink specials and lots of live music.

The City of Charleston is hosting its annual New Year’s Eve in Marion Square downtown.  It’s a free, family-friendly, non-alcoholic way to celebrate a little earlier in the day.  Happy New Year, Charleston! will take place from 4:00 p.m. till 10:00 p.m. and is perfect for the younger ones in your group.  There will be lots of fun activities like…

  • Karaoke for kids and adventurous adults;
  • face painting by Susan Fedor, plus arts & crafts;
  • jump castles from Charleston Fun Factory;
  • crazy hat station;
  • photo booth;
  • Live music by Cattle in the Cane (bluegrass);

This coming New Year’s Day will be the annual Polar Bear Plunge on Sullivan’s Island, just over the Breach Inlet bridge from your luxury house on Isle of Palms.  It draws quite a costumed crowd to Dunleavy’s, where folks get fortified before heading into the surf.  Plus it’s all for a good cause (“Freezin’ for a Reason”), benefitting the Special Olympics. Dunleavy’s opens at 9:00 a.m.  The event lasts until 2:00.  Folks will head out to the beach about 12:30, with the actual plunge happening at 1:00.  It should be a nippy one this year! FAB, or the Folly Association of Business, created what has now become the 5th  annual Bill Murray Look-a-Like Polar Bear Plunge  -  in honor of Bill Murray, the SNL alum, film actor, local resident and  co-owner of the Charleston Riverdogs baseball team.  You’re invited to leave your Folly beach house Charleston, head down to the Blu/Tides Hotel dressed as your favorite Bill Murray character and “Come Freeze Your Bills Off.” There will be prizes for best costume in four categories  -  Best Guy, Best Girl, Best Team and Best Overall Bill Murray.  Registration starts at 11:00 a.m., the contest judging happens at noon, and the plunge itself is at 1:30.
