This weekend is a festive one, complete with the Mount Pleasant Christmas Light Parade plus a Chanukah celebration.

Well, COVID’s taken its toll on a lot of things, including holiday parades.  The downtown Charleston Christmas Parade as well as the annual Parade of Boats around Charleston Harbor both got cancelled this year.

But the Town of Mount Pleasant is charging full steam ahead with theirs, the Mount Pleasant Christmas Light Parade.  It’s a very popular local event, and this is its 25th year.

It’s a night parade, and part of the fun is that the floats are lit up.  It also starts with a bang  –  a huge fireworks show kicks off the fun.

Mt. P. Christmas Light Parade deets:

  • This Sunday evening, December 13th
  • Celebration located along Coleman Boulevard in Mount Pleasant;
  • Kicks off at 5:30 p.m. with a fireworks show near the Farmers Market area and Moultrie Middle School;
  • Parade itself begins after the fireworks;
  • Float “starting line” where Live Oak Drive intersects with Coleman;
  • Parade route travels south along Coleman Boulevard toward the Ravenel Bridge;
  • End of parade route is where Coleman meets Patriots Point Road, right before the bridge;
  • You are encouraged to social distance along the parade route and wear masks if possible;
  • Organizers will be livestreaming the Christmas Light Parade if you’d prefer to watch it from home.

The Christmas Light Parade goes until about 8:00 p.m.  Find out more at the official webpage on the Town’s site.

Celebrate Chanukah at a new venue

Another popular holiday celebration is also getting a COVID tweak.

Chanukah on the Square traditionally takes place in Marion Square in downtown Charleston.  It’s a festive time celebrating the Jewish Festival of Lights with a giant menorah, fun activities for the kids, and plenty of free food.

This year, organizers have switched the venue and turned it into a drive-thru event.

They’re calling it Chanukah at the Bend.

The new location is The Bend in North Charleston, 3775 Azalea Drive for your GPS.  It starts at 4:00 p.m. this Sunday, December 13th and lasts till 5:15 p.m.

Here’s how organizers describe it:  “This year the event will be drive-in style, where families are invited to tailgate at a social distance, located at The Bend. Enjoy live music and food from the comfort (and safety) of your designated tailgate area while you watch the sunset along the Ashley River!”

There will be plenty of live music, food and refreshments like hot latkes, donuts, hot pretzels, hot dogs, burgers & soup, Chanukah treats and giveaways, the lighting of the giant menorah at dark, and a bunch of children’s entertainment and activities.

This Chanukah celebration is absolutely free but you are encouraged to register.  You can do so at the official website.
