Finally, after all the months of waiting and expectations and marking days off the calendar, the special holiday has finally arrived…. National Tea Day! OK, while it might not be one of the better known of national occasions, the folks in the nearby town of Summerville have found a really HUGE way of celebrating it. They are brewing one GIGANTIC cup of iced tea in an attempt to make it into the Guinness Book of World Records. If you are staying in one of our SC vacation rentals, be it a luxury house on Isle of Palms or a Folly Beach house Charleston, chances are some sweet tea will be in your fridge.  This is the South, after all, and sweet tea and the beach just seem to go together. If you don’t feel like brewing it up yourself, just head on up I-26 from your Charleston beach house and take part in the Summerville fun.  It’s an easy drive inland from all our luxury beach house rentals SC, both Isle of Palms vacation rentals and Folly Beach house rentals Charleston SC.  Don’t worry about them running out… they’re making 1,400 gallons of the stuff. The brewing started this morning at 7:00 a.m., followed by mixing in the sugar and concentrate at 11:30.   The Guinness judging and ceremony will take place at 3:00… then the real party starts later  -  a giant TEA PARTY, if you will  -  from 5:00 till 8:00 p.m., in front of Town Hall.  For just $5.00 you get a special souvenir Mason jar that allows you to drink all the tea you want.  There will be lots of live music and dancing in the street, and food and goodies available for purchase… probably many of them on the tea theme. The town of Summerville considers itself the birthplace of sweet tea, so it makes sense they should hold the world record.  They even have what’s known as a “Sweet Tea Trail” of all things tea related  -  here’s a link to more on their website: The current record is 1,140 gallons of sweet tea made by a Chick-fil-A in Oklahoma back in 2010.  Alas, in that instance, they threw it away instead of allowing people to drink it. This seems like a much better idea. The big event will include:

  • A 10-foot custom container that looks like a giant blue Solo cup, made by Scout Boats – and it’s nicknamed, “Mason”
  • The goal: to brew 1,400 gallons of sweet tea
  • To be used: 116 pounds of local tea leaves from The Charleston Tea Plantation -  the only tea plantation in North America
  • To be cooled down with:3,000 pounds of ice
  • To be sweetened with:2,100 pounds of Dixie Crystals sugar

Here’s more on the event: So happy tea day  -  and remember, when you are in the market for rental homes South Carolina, namely beach rentals Charleston, call or EMAIL Exclusive Properties.  Our Isle of Palms luxury rentals are world-record awesome.
