Fancy hats!  Bowties!  Tailgating!  It’s steeplechase time.

Steeplechase of Charleston

Steeplechase involves horses and their riders travelling as fast as they can over a course filled with four-foot high jumps.  It’s a long-standing Lowcountry tradition, dating all the way back to 1792.  It's also is a perfect chance to dress up and celebrate  -  something which the Lowcountry knows how to do, in style.

The event used to be known as the “Charleston Cup.”  A few years ago, the Post & Courier took over the reins, revamping and rebranding it as the Steeplechase of Charleston.

Like other sports, Steeplechase has an annual season.  The Charleston event marks the culmination of the season, which also includes race meets in Aiken, Camden, and Saratoga Springs.

The venue is The Plantation at Stono Ferry Racetrack in Hollywood, SC.  They’ll run five high stakes races with $100,000 prize money up for grabs.  Check out the beloved Merchant Market, with all sorts of elegant artisan goods for sale, food, a cocktail garden, live entertainment, demos, family activities, and a style section.

And be sure to check out the 3rd annual Corgi Cup.  Watch 20 of those spirited, short-legged cuties race for glory.  Queen Elizabeth must be smiling down from above.

And then there’s the tailgating.  Word to the wise: folks in the Lowcountry know how to tailgate with class and pull out all the stops.  Silver and crystal are often involved.  It’s a place to see and be seen.

Gates open at 8:00 a.m., with opening ceremonies at 12:30 p.m. and the first race at 1:00 p.m.  Most people arrive between 10:00 and 11:00 a.m.  The fun lasts till 5:00 p.m.

You can purchase general admission, tailgating packages (railside or trackview), or VIP Chalet passes.  Kids 12 and under are free.  Tailgate packages have add-on options like a tent, table and chairs and linens.

NOTE: Date and details for 2024 are tentative.  Check back closer to the event for the latest info.
