Cycle to the IOP to raise money for a great cause.

LOWVELO Bike Ride

Here’s a terrific annual fundraiser that has its finish line on the Isle of Palms.

It’s the popular LOWVELO cycling event, where individuals and teams of caring folks ride one of five routes to the IOP, raising money with each mile.  Proceeds go to the MUSC Hollings Cancer Center in Charleston, the only National Cancer Institute-designated center in the state of South Carolina.

Dr. Raymond N. DuBois, Director of the MUSC Hollings Cancer Center, had this to say about it: “Since LOWVELO first took hold in 2019, we’ve been amazed at how our community has come together to raise money for cancer research and make a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer. Events like this really do make a difference in the fight against a disease that touches so many.”

Exact date and details for 2024 haven't been annouced yet.  But here's what went on in 2023:

  • Saturday, November 4th;
    • Your choice of routes.  The 10-mile and 20-mile “Island Ride” options both start and end on the Isle of Palms;
    • The longer 23-mile, 50-mile, and 80-mile routes start with a police escort at Brittlebank Park downtown Charleston, and all end on the Isle of Palms;
    • There are also “home team” options for stationary bikes so you can participate from home/virtually;
    • Registration is just $50 and counts toward your fundraising minimum;
    • You’ll receive a LOWVELO23 T-shirt, cycling jersey, swag bag and admission to the Block Party after the ride, as well as the Awards Ceremony in early 2024.

This really is a terrific event and way to help others, whether you ride or support those who do.  And check this out from their website  -  “Don’t have a bike? Don’t worry! We have free bikes and helmets available for any riders choosing the 10- or 20-mile route!”

NOTE: Use the online code "LV23" to waive the registration fee by Oct. 31.
