The charm of a German Christmas market comes to the Lowcountry.
Here’s a relatively new event begun in 2021 that is getting raves. It’s a very authentic Christmas market just like the ones all over Germany.
CHRISTkindltmarkt was created by a talented mother and daughter duo who were inspired by friendships with a German au pair and their subsequent trips to Europe. They’ve recreated the magic at their gorgeous wedding and event venue, RiverOaks Charleston, on the water in Awendaw, up North Highway 17.
It’s all there - twinkling lights, festive music, handcrafted Christmas ornaments and creches, hot pretzels and other delicious authentic German fare, gluhwein, imported beer, and high quality vendors of all kinds. Be sure to check out their Instagram, which is guaranteed to put you in the yuletide mood.
You can either book an afternoon session (from 2:00 till 5:00) when children are welcome, or a night visit (from 7:00 till 10:00) which is adults only, due to safety issues with all the water around at night. You’ll take a shuttle from your car to the market. Food and beverage vendors open an hour before the market does, so you can arrive early if you like.
Tickets sell out fast, so grab them while you can on Eventbrite.
NOTE: Dates for 2024 are tentative, so check back later for more info. It's usually on the first two weekends in December (Friday through Sunday).
