The next couple of weekends have gone to the dogs, with Puppy Bowl and the IOP’s annual Doggie Day at the Rec. This Sunday, February 2nd is Super Bowl LIV, when the San Francisco 49ers will take on the Kansas City Chiefs in Miami. Animal lovers probably already know about one of the greatest programming moves of all time  -  Puppy Bowl.  16 years ago Animal Planet came up with the concept, pitting two teams of adorable rescue puppies (Team Fluff and Team Ruff) against each other on the Astroturf gridiron.  Basically, the puppies romp around and play.  Refs call penalties when needed to keep the peace.  Then when one pup grabs a toy and manages to cross the goal line, pandemonium ensues.  Cheerleaders, which have included hedgehogs, penguins, silkie chickens and pot-bellied pigs, go wild.  It’s adorable. They’ve since added a Kitten Bowl as well.  All of the puppies and kittens are available for adoption.  Since its inception, 100% of the “players” have been adopted into loving homes. Puppy Bowl XVI airs this Sunday at 3:00 p.m. ET on Animal Planet. You can see the awesome starting lineup here.

Check out our own local Puppy Bowl!

  Joining in the fun, Charleston Animal Society is sponsoring our own Puppy Bowl.  It’s the 3rd annual Pup Bowl, happening tomorrow  -  Saturday, February 1st  - at Mount Pleasant Towne Centre.  Adoptable puppies and dogs will romp around the gridiron  -  the San Francisco Puppy-Niners versus the Kansas City Canines.  One quarter of the game will feature “The Legends”  -  adoptable dogs over one year old, who will have their own special parade.  Get set for:

  • The “game” will be called and emceed by DJ Luigi, with music and more by Latin Groove Entertainment;
  • Halftime show by Rotie Salley, who will do requests in any genre;
  • Bounce house, face painting, glitter tattoos and balloon animals for the kids;
