Run for the turtles in this sunset beach run!

Turtle Trek 5K

Here’s a fun run going on right on the Isle of Palms beach.  Not only is it wholesome and healthy, it also helps support a great cause.  Think: loggerheads, and sea life.

It’s the South Carolina Aquarium’s beach run, the Turtle Trek 5K.   Called “A 5K Sunset Beach Run and Kids’ Fun Run,” it benefits all kinds of sea turtles and the Aquarium’s newly renovated Sea Turtle Care Center.

The Turtle Trek takes place on a Saturday in the fall from 3:00 p.m. till about 9:00 p.m.  This is unusual since most run/walks happen in the morning.

The Turtle Trek is a popular run that always sells out fast, so sign up early.

Here are the details:

  • Takes place at the IOP County Park, which also happens to be the location of many of the Aquarium’s sea turtle releases.  It's located where the IOP Connector meets the beach.
  • Packet Pickup and Beach Sweep kick things off from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m.
  • Kids’ fun run starts at 4:30 p.m.
  • Adults’ 5K beach run starts at 5:00.
  • Registration fee ($45 adult, $25 kids) includes a timed race entry, technical T-shirt, reusable race bag and decal, plus After Party access at The Windjammer.  They also have remote running options.
  • After Party will have awards and live music from Moxie.
  • Awards celebration begins at 5:30.
  • Awards given for Top 3 Overall (male/female) and Top 3 in Age Categories (male/female): 1-9, 10-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60+. All kids’ fun run participants will receive ribbons.
  • Bring supplies to help the Sea Turtle Care Center, and you’ll get to spin the prize wheel!  Needed donations include dish soap, bleach, HE laundry detergent, 13-gallon trash bags and rubbing alcohol.

In 2021's Turtle Trek 5K, people were encouraged to fundraise for your favorite turtle species   -  Team Kemp’s Ridley, Team Loggerhead or Team Green.  They have a pretty cute fundraising toolkit to help.

IOP County Park is located at 1 14th Avenue.  Parking at the county park is $10 per car, or free for Gold Pass members.   Or you could just walk, bike or golf cart from your Isle of Palms vacation home.  The event will go on rain or shine.

NOTE: Date for the 2022 Turtle Trek 5K is tentative.  The 2021 race was held October 9th, while in previous years it took place in September.  Check back closer to the event for updates.
