Whether you’re on break staying in one of our Isle of Palms vacation rentals, or at home, being green is cool and smart.

One of the big trends of late, along the lines of living/shopping/eating local, is doing things to help our planet.  Like taking part in a beach sweep, or banning the use of plastic bags in island businesses, as the IOP has done.  The plastic bag ban near our Isle of Palms vacation rentals was the first for a municipality in the state, and others are starting to follow suit.  Folly Beach is currently pursuing a ban as well.

The Charleston Green Connection is a handy newsletter that connects people to ways we can help the planet.  They highlight events and happenings in the Lowcountry, opportunities to get involved, and ways to make our daily life a little more eco-friendly.  It’s sponsored by the City of Charleston and is a worthy addition to one’s  inbox.

Here’s a link to their office of Planning, Preservation and Sustainability:  http://www.charleston-sc.gov/index.aspx?nid=272

Even if you are just here visiting the Lowcountry staying in one of our beach house rentals Charleston SC, a luxury house on Isle of Palms or beach rentals Charleston on Folly, it’s still of interest.  They regularly post national initiatives as well as local events that get you engaged while here.  Their goal is to provide “information regarding local, regional and national sustainability opportunities.”

Natural cures not medicines - for your stay in Isle of Palms vacation rentals or while at home

Natural cures not medicines - for your stay in Isle of Palms vacation rentals or while at home

In a mailing a while back, they had a link to the above chart, which is quite helpful.  It’s amazing how often we run to the drugstore or pharmacy when, more often than not, a simple, natural product will do the job  -   better, more economically, and with minimal side effect.

Funny how often the wisdom in nature trumps medicine.

In this chart, seven simple ingredients have 72 different practical daily uses while in our Isle of Palms vacation rentals or at home.  They include:

Lemon Juice: Great for detox, digestion, sore throats, immunity, whitens clothes, cleans glass, highlights hair, can reduce wrinkles, shrink pores and disinfect a myriad of surfaces.

Coconut Oil: Can polish wood, be used as WD-40, lip gloss, deodorant, prevents wrinkles, improves thyroid function and can reduce migraines, just to mention a few.  Also serves as a very healthy fat substitute in cooking and baking.  Coconut oil is a great thing to throw in your bag when packing for a stay in Isle of Palms vacation rentals.

Apple Cider Vinegar: Repels fleas, deodorizes laundry, can soothe a sunburn (handy if you’re in one of our SC vacation rentals  -  either one of our Isle of Palms vacation rentals or a Folly Beach house Charleston  -  because if you’re in a Charleston beach house, chances are you will get a lot of sun on the beach).  It washes hair, treats acne, is great for detox, can help control blood pressure, can cure yeast infections, prevent colds and much much more.

White Vinegar: Can polish silver, clean windows, unclog drains, cure an upset stomach, soothe a bee sting, used as a natural conditioner…

Baking Soda: Puts out fires, helpful for cleaning toilets or ovens, can be used in deodorants and toothpaste, heals diaper rash, treats heartburn...

Castile Soap: All-purpose cleaner, dish soap, can mop floors with it, body wash, pet shampoo, toothpaste, treats eczema, psoriasis, acne and other skin problems.

Castor Oil: Keeps away rodents, helps plant health, strengthen eyelashes, heals cracked heels, softens cuticles, treats dry/itchy skin, can be used as a laxative, helps induce labor and can even reduce menstrual cramping.

Simple is often best, for sure.

So save yourself some $, be kind to the environment and opt for natural remedies as instead of man-made chemical compounds.  It’s worth a try.
