The South Carolina Aquarium is a non-profit organization that's made a splash in the area since opening in 2000. It is filled with over 60 exhibits, many of them interactive, as well as a 385,000-gallon Great Ocean Tank that's home to 450 creatures, as well as a "Touch Tank" where you can handle stingrays, horseshoe crabs, starfish, and other local marine animals. Recent traveling "visitors" include penguins and an albino alligator.
The Aquarium also hosts the Sea Turtle Rescue Program, with a state of the art facility that provides medical help to injured or sick sea turtles, including Loggerheads, green, and Kemp's ridleys. After turtles are nursed back to health, volunteers and staff often release them back into the wild (amidst great cheers from the public) at nearby beach locations including the Isle of Palms, Sullivan's Island and Kiawah.
