The Cooper River Bridge Run is arguably the best organized and best conducted 10-K race in the world. Begun in 1978, this annual trek from Mount Pleasant across the bridge into downtown Charleston now draws almost 40,000 runners and walkers, taking in the breezes and vistas of Charleston Harbor as they race against world-class competition. The unique setting and community involvement combine for unparalleled participant satisfaction and an all-around festive weekend. Many join the race in costumes and groups, and there is also a kid's run. The Cooper River Bridge Run serves as a model of health motivation for other communities and is a draw for participants from around the world.
Since the Ravenel (Cooper River) Bridge opened in July of 2005, crossing it on foot or bike has become one of the most popular and fun daily exercise options for people in the Charleston area. In addition to the eight lanes of vehicular traffic, there is a protected and dedicated lane for walkers/runners and one for bicycles, both overlooking Charleston Harbor. The City of Charleston is developing walk and bike paths that extend into the peninsula. There's ample shaded parking on the Mount Pleasant side, at the beautiful new Memorial Waterfront Park - a $14 million, 22-acre park that includes a 1,250 foot pier built on the foundations of the old Grace Bridge, an 8,100 square foot pavilion for special events, and a visitor's center. The pier offers fishing, rod rentals, a snack and gift shop, rest rooms, plenty of benches, picnic spots and swings to take in the harbor views, and on land are a large children's playground as well as a memorial park honoring veterans who lost their lives during wars throughout our nation's history. The park is located at 71 Harry Hallman Boulevard in Mount Pleasant, phone (843) 762-9946.
